Describe the character in the story which shows strong character traits. Explain how that helped or deterred him or her in character development.

In the novel, Step by Wicked Step, five school-children read the journal of Richard Harwick which detailed his sad story of family life with a stepfather. The five schoolchildren who came from broken homes were inspired to relate their own family life . They felt they had something in common with Richard.

The character who shows strong character traits is Colin in the story. The Bluebird of Happiness. Colin never knew his real father who left him a few weeks after he was born. When he was eight months old, his mother took up with Jack. Colin became attached to him as he was the only father he knew.

Jack walked him to school and took him to the park. He practically looked after him as his mother did not have the time. Colin had a good parental relationship with him as Jack listened. Colin told him about his school, friends and teachers. One day, Colin's mother left Jack and moved to another place. Colin remained loyal to Jack and was steadfast in wanting him around. When he realised that Jack would not be joining them, he was upset  and frustrated but his mother refused to listen him.

Colin still harboured hopes of seeing Jack again. He did badly in school as he could not concentrate on his studies. But, he was determined to see Jack again. So, to be able to do it, he saved up every penny he had. For his birthday, he would rather have cash them presents.

This showed Collin had strong character traits of loyalty, determination and steadfastness. This helped him to develop from an uncertain and confused dreamy boy to a person determined to achieve his dream.
